The Intercom Market Has a Problem. Midland Just Solved It.

Ask any experienced rider what frustrates them most about motorcycle intercoms and you'll hear the same answers. Too many buttons. Too many modes. Too much time spent learning the interface and not enough time actually using it. Systems that work perfectly in a car park during setup and then fall apart at 110 kilometres an hour when you actually need them.

The motorcycle intercom industry has confused complexity with capability for too long.

The Midland BTR1 Advanced X starts from a completely different place. It starts with a question that the industry forgot to ask - what does the rider actually need to do while they're riding? And then it engineers the entire interface around that answer.

The answer, as it turns out, is remarkably simple.

1 Click. 2 Clicks. Nothing Else to Learn.

1 click manages your phone functions.
2 clicks activates the intercom.

That's the entire interface. No mode selection. No button combinations to memorise. No pulling over to figure out why it's not doing what you want it to do.

This matters more than it sounds. Your hands are on the bars. Your eyes are on the road. Your brain is processing everything around you at speed. The last thing you need is an intercom demanding cognitive attention that should be going elsewhere. The BTR1 Advanced X demands almost none. It just works - even with gloves on, even in the rain, even when you're working hard through technical roads.

This is what genuinely intuitive technology looks like. Not technology that claims to be simple. Technology that actually is.

65 Years of Communication Engineering Behind Every Device

Midland isn't a brand that appeared when the motorcycle intercom market started growing and decided to have a go. They've been engineering communication technology since 1959. Headquartered in Reggio Emilia, Italy, a region that has given the world some of the finest engineering in history, they have over 60 years of research, development, and innovation behind every product that leaves the factory.

Their internal R&D division handles the entire product design and development process in-house. Engineers, researchers, firmware and hardware designers, all working under one roof in Italy. That's not outsourced. That's not licensed from a generic manufacturer. That's genuine, proprietary communication engineering built by people who have been doing this for generations.

The BTR1 Advanced X shares its design language and control ergonomics with Midland's flagship RUSH RCF model. When you're holding it, you're holding something that was designed at the top of the range and engineered down - not something that was built to a price point and dressed up.

ECE 22.06 Certified. Which Matters More Than Most People Realise.

From July 2023, all new motorcycle helmets must comply with the stricter ECE 22.06 standard. And under that regulation, every component fitted to the helmet, including the intercom must also be certified.

Midland was the first intercom manufacturer in the world to meet ECE 22.06 requirements. Not one of the first. The first.

The BTR1 Advanced X carries ECE 22.06 Universal Accessory certification, which means it's approved for use with any ECE 22.06 compliant helmet, including the Shark Spartan RS and Bell Broozer Arc range we stock at Biker Torque.

If you're buying a helmet today, you're buying an ECE 22.06 helmet. Your intercom needs to be certified to match. The BTR1 Advanced X is. Many alternatives aren't. That's not a minor detail, that's a compliance issue that will only become more relevant as the new standard becomes universal.

The RCF Audio Partnership. Why It's Not Just Marketing

Every intercom brand claims good audio. The BTR1 Advanced X can back that claim up with something most others can't, a genuine partnership with RCF.

RCF was founded in Italy in 1949. They are one of the world leaders in professional audio systems. When major concert venues, stadiums, and broadcast facilities around the world need audio equipment that performs without compromise, they turn to RCF. This is not a brand that dabbles in consumer electronics. This is a company whose entire existence is built around getting audio right.

The speaker system in the BTR1 Advanced X was designed by RCF specifically for the riding environment. Not adapted from an existing product. Designed specifically for this application.

The ear cushions complete the picture, memory foam core for rider comfort on long days, protein leather coating for durability, and a physical design that improves both sound performance and low frequency perception. The cushioning isn't just about comfort. It's an active part of the audio system, creating the seal and isolation that allows the RCF-designed speakers to perform the way they were engineered to.

The difference between this and a generic speaker system is immediately audible. Music sounds like music. Voices are clear and present. This is what premium audio in a motorcycle intercom actually sounds like.

DNK™ - Digital Noise Killer - Because Wind and Engine Noise Are the Enemy

The single biggest challenge in motorcycle intercom design is noise. Wind noise at speed, engine noise through the chassis and helmet, road noise, all of it combines to create an audio environment that defeats lesser systems entirely.

Midland's DNK™ - Digital Noise Killer is a digital filter that reduces wind and engine noise by up to 80%. Not a passive system. Not foam and padding doing the work. Active digital filtering that analyses the audio signal in real time and strips out the noise that doesn't belong there.

What this means in practice is clean, clear communication at speed, in crosswinds, in rain, and in any conditions Australian roads throw at you. The rider on the other end of the intercom hears your voice, not your engine. You hear them, not the weather.

For any rider who has tried to have a conversation at highway speed through a lesser intercom and ended up with nothing but frustration and wind roar - DNK™ is the reason you switch to Midland.

Group Riding. Properly.

In conference mode the BTR1 Advanced X connects up to 4 motorcyclists simultaneously from a maximum distance of 1,200 metres. For group riding on Australian roads - where the group naturally spreads out across challenging terrain, where overtaking creates gaps, where the pace varies across different riding abilities - that range is genuinely significant.

Universal intercom connection means it's compatible with intercoms from other brands. So when you're the Midland rider in a group of mixed systems you're not isolated. You're in the conversation.

And for solo riders  the BTR1 Advanced X connects two mobile phones or GPS devices simultaneously. Phone in one ear, navigation in the other. Or music and navigation. The connectivity ecosystem is genuinely comprehensive.

23 Hours. A Full Weekend Without Thinking About Charging.

Battery life on a motorcycle intercom is a practical concern that doesn't get nearly enough attention in product descriptions. You're on the road. You don't have easy access to power. The last thing you want is an intercom that needs babysitting.

The BTR1 Advanced X delivers over 23 hours of talk time autonomy from a single USB Type-C charge. Friday night ride. All day Saturday. All day Sunday. Back to the charger when you get home. The intercom never becomes the reason you stop having a good time.

Who Should Buy the Single Unit

The BTR1 Advanced X Single is the right choice for several types of riders. The solo rider who wants premium phone, music, GPS, and radio connectivity without the twin pack cost. The rider whose regular riding partner already runs an intercom from another brand the universal connectivity covers that situation completely. The rider who wants to experience Midland's audio quality and interface before committing to a twin pack. And the rider who does a mix of solo and group riding and needs a device that handles both without compromise.

This is not a starter intercom. This is a fully capable, premium device that happens to be available as a single unit.
