The Intercom Market Has a Problem. Midland Just Solved It.

Ask any experienced rider what frustrates them most about motorcycle intercoms and you'll hear the same answers. Too many buttons. Too many modes. Too much time spent learning the interface and not enough time actually using it. Systems that work perfectly in a car park during setup and then fall apart at 110 kilometres an hour when you actually need them.

The motorcycle intercom industry has confused complexity with capability for too long.

The Midland BTR1 Advanced X starts from a completely different place. It starts with a question that the industry forgot to ask, what does the rider actually need to do while they're riding? And then it engineers the entire interface around that answer.

The answer, as it turns out, is remarkably simple.

1 Click. 2 Clicks. Nothing Else to Learn.

1 click manages your phone functions.
2 clicks activates the intercom.

That's the entire interface. No mode selection. No button combinations to memorise. No pulling over to figure out why it's not doing what you want it to do.

This matters more than it sounds. Your hands are on the bars. Your eyes are on the road. Your brain is processing everything around you at speed. The last thing you need is an intercom demanding cognitive attention that should be going elsewhere. The BTR1 Advanced X demands almost none. It just works - even with gloves on, even in the rain, even when you're working hard through technical roads.

This is what genuinely intuitive technology looks like. Not technology that claims to be simple. Technology that actually is.

Why the Twin Pack Makes Sense

Riding together is one of the great pleasures of motorcycling. And communication between two riders changes the experience completely. Pointing out hazards before they become problems. Calling the next turn. Checking in on your riding partner on a long day. Sharing the moment when you crest a hill and the view opens up and you both know exactly why you ride.

The BTR1 Advanced X Twin Pack puts two fully capable, premium devices in the box at a price that makes significantly more sense than buying two singles separately. It's the logical starting point for couples, regular riding partners, or any two riders who spend meaningful time on the road together.

Both devices are identical. Both perform identically. Both carry the full BTR1 Advanced X specification. There's no primary and secondary unit,  just two riders in full, clear, two-way communication from the moment they leave the driveway.

And when the group grows beyond two,  the BTR1 Advanced X conference mode connects up to 4 riders simultaneously from a maximum distance of 1,200 metres. The twin pack is where the conversation starts. It's not where it has to finish.

65 Years of Communication Engineering Behind Every Device

Midland isn't a brand that appeared when the motorcycle intercom market started growing and decided to have a go. They've been engineering communication technology since 1959. Headquartered in Reggio Emilia, Italy, a region that has given the world some of the finest engineering in history, they have over 60 years of research, development, and innovation behind every product that leaves the factory.

Their internal R&D division handles the entire product design and development process in-house. Engineers, researchers, firmware and hardware designers, all working under one roof in Italy. That's not outsourced. That's not licensed from a generic manufacturer. That's genuine, proprietary communication engineering built by people who have been doing this for generations.

The BTR1 Advanced X shares its design language and control ergonomics with Midland's flagship RUSH RCF model. When you're holding it, you're holding something that was designed at the top of the range and engineered down, not something that was built to a price point and dressed up.

ECE 22.06 Certified. Which Matters More Than Most People Realise.

From July 2023, all new motorcycle helmets must comply with the stricter ECE 22.06 standard. And under that regulation, every component fitted to the helmet including the intercom must also be certified.

Midland was the first intercom manufacturer in the world to meet ECE 22.06 requirements. Not one of the first. The first.

Both devices in the BTR1 Advanced X Twin Pack carry ECE 22.06 Universal Accessory certification which means they're approved for use with any ECE 22.06 compliant helmet, including the Shark Spartan RS and Bell Broozer Arc range we stock at Biker Torque.

If you're buying new helmets today, you're buying ECE 22.06 helmets. Your intercoms need to be certified to match. Both devices in this twin pack are. Many alternatives aren't. That's not a minor detail - that's a compliance issue that will only become more relevant as the new standard becomes universal.

The RCF Audio Partnership - Why It's Not Just Marketing

Every intercom brand claims good audio. The BTR1 Advanced X can back that claim up with something most others can't, a genuine partnership with RCF.

RCF was founded in Italy in 1949. They are one of the world leaders in professional audio systems. When major concert venues, stadiums, and broadcast facilities around the world need audio equipment that performs without compromise, they turn to RCF. This is not a brand that dabbles in consumer electronics. This is a company whose entire existence is built around getting audio right.

The speaker system in each BTR1 Advanced X was designed by RCF specifically for the riding environment. Not adapted from an existing product. Designed specifically for this application. Both devices in the twin pack run the same RCF-designed 40mm HiFi Super Bass Sound speakers - so both riders get the same premium audio experience, not one good unit and one compromised unit.

The ear cushions complete the picture, memory foam core for rider comfort on long days, protein leather coating for durability, and a physical design that improves both sound performance and low frequency perception. This isn't just about comfort. It's an active part of the audio system on both devices.

DNK™ - Digital Noise Killer - Because Wind and Engine Noise Are the Enemy

The single biggest challenge in motorcycle intercom design is noise. Wind noise at speed, engine noise through the chassis and helmet, road noise, all of it combines to create an audio environment that defeats lesser systems entirely.

Midland's DNK™ - Digital Noise Killer is a digital filter that reduces wind and engine noise by up to 80% on both devices simultaneously. Not a passive system. Active digital filtering that analyses the audio signal in real time and strips out the noise that doesn't belong there.

What this means in practice is that when one rider speaks to the other at highway speed, in crosswinds, in rain, and in any conditions Australian roads throw at you, the voice comes through clean and clear. Not wind roar. Not engine noise. Just the voice of the person you're riding with.

For any rider who has tried to have a conversation at highway speed through a lesser intercom and ended up with nothing but frustration - DNK™ is the reason you switch to Midland.

Group Riding. Properly.

The Twin Pack gets two riders talking immediately. But the BTR1 Advanced X conference mode scales to 4 riders simultaneously from a maximum distance of 1,200 metres. For group rides on Australian roads, where the group naturally spreads out across challenging terrain, where overtaking creates gaps, where the pace varies, that range and that capacity is genuinely significant.

Universal intercom connection means both devices are compatible with intercoms from other brands. So when your group includes riders on mixed systems, nobody gets left out of the conversation.

And when you're riding solo, each device connects two mobile phones or GPS devices simultaneously. The twin pack devices are equally capable as standalone units.

23 Hours. A Full Weekend Without Thinking About Charging.

Battery life on a motorcycle intercom is a practical concern that doesn't get nearly enough attention. The BTR1 Advanced X delivers over 23 hours of talk time autonomy from a single USB Type-C charge on each device. Both riders. Full weekend. Friday night, all day Saturday, all day Sunday. Back to the charger when you get home. The intercom never becomes the reason the ride ends early.

Compatibility That Covers the Garage

Devices connect to:

  • Smartphones, two simultaneously per device
  • GPS devices
  • TFT systems from BMW, KTM, Ducati and other major manufacturers
  • FM stereo radio with RDS
  • Music sharing between rider and passenger
  • Firmware updates via PC over USB

The Automatic Gain Control (AGC) system on each device automatically adjusts microphone sensitivity based on ambient noise, so both riders' voices remain clear and consistent whether cruising through town or sitting at highway speed. It works invisibly and makes every conversation better.

Magic Lock magnetic coupling on both devices makes installation straightforward and secure. Both devices come with two microphone options, flexible wired mic for full face helmets, boom mic for open face - covering whatever helmets both riders are running.
