Yamaha XSR900GP Review: 1980s GP Looks with 2025 Performance

The Yamaha XSR900GP combines 1980s Grand Prix nostalgia with cutting-edge performance in a package that's equal parts beautiful and bonkers. This retro-styled rocket proves that sometimes the best way to honour the past is to absolutely pack it with modern technology, all while looking like you've time-traveled from the golden age of motorcycle racing.

That legendary CP3 engine produces serious grunt with a sound that'll make you grin like an idiot every time you crack the throttle. The lightweight Delta box chassis feels planted and confidence-inspiring, while the fully adjustable suspension is some of the smoothest we've experienced on a bike in this style. Those gorgeous red wheels and fake number boards nail the 1980s GP aesthetic perfectly – it's like riding a piece of motorcycle art.

The electronics package includes lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, front wheel lift control, and Yamaha's third-generation quick shifter that's genuinely flawless both up and down through the box.

The riding position is comfortably sporty with those clip-ons, but engage your core and it's surprisingly very good for longer rides. That little pill-box headlight has been divisive, but I reckon it looks brilliant – like the front of a MotoGP bike with just enough practicality for the road.

For riders who want their motorcycle passion served with maximum style and substance, the XSR900GP delivers Yamaha's engineering excellence wrapped in pure 1980s cool.
