BMW R18 Roctane - The Ultimate Bagger Experience?
Share
With its massive 1.8L boxer twin, bagger styling and premium touring features, the R18 Roctane represents BMW's bold move into American bagger territory.
BMW's R18 range has been turning heads since its introduction, but the German manufacturer has now updated what might be their most compelling variant yet - the R18 Roctane. This isn't just another cruiser; it's BMW's interpretation of the American bagger, complete with integrated panniers, a 21-inch front wheel, and enough presence to command respect on any boulevard.
THE THEATRICAL BEAST
Starting the R18 Roctane is an event in itself. The massive 1,802cc boxer twin doesn't just fire up - it performs. The bike rocks dramatically from side to side as the engine settles into its rhythm, a theatrical display that never fails to bring a smile. It's proof that the Germans understand that motorcycles should be more than mere transportation; they should stir the soul.
This near-2-liter boxer twin produces 91hp at 4,750rpm and a substantial 163Nm of torque at just 3,000rpm. While the horsepower figures match other R18 variants, BMW has extracted an additional 5 Nm of torque for the Roctane - though in practice, this marginal increase is barely noticeable.
BAGGER BEAUTY WITH GERMAN PRECISION
The Roctane's styling is polarising in the best possible way. The integrated panniers flow seamlessly with the bike's lines, while the 21-inch front wheel gives it an imposing stance that's distinctly different from BMW's heritage-focused Classic line and First Edition. The finish quality is exceptional, particularly on the Dragonfire Red Metallic test bike - easily the pick of the three available colours, Black Storm Metallic and Mineral Gray Metallic being the alternatives.
The black chrome treatment extends beyond the exhaust headers to include the push rods, creating a premium aesthetic that elevates the entire package. While the exhaust note is more subdued than some might prefer, it maintains that distinctive boxer rumble.
COMFORT MEETS CAPABILITY
Where the Roctane truly excels is in long-distance comfort. The suspension setup is significantly more compliant than the harsh rear shock found on previous versions, while the seat provides genuine all-day comfort. The riding position is neutral and comfortable and transforms highway miles into effortless cruising.
The 21-inch front wheel, which could have compromised handling, surprisingly doesn't affect the bike's agility. The Roctane turns with unexpected precision and maintains the excellent handling characteristics that set BMW's cruisers apart from traditional American offerings.
PRACTICAL TOURING MACHINE
Standard equipment includes cruise control, tire pressure monitoring, and those integrated panniers. However, the bags, while stylish, offer limited internal space due to their unique shape. Solo touring is manageable, but two-up adventures might require additional luggage solutions.
The bike's 16 litre fuel capacity is adequate for its intended use. BMW's continued omission of a fuel gauge remains puzzling at this price point although there is a low fuel warning light.
THE COMPETITION
At AUD$31158 ride away, the Roctane positions itself competitively against rivals like the Harley-Davidson Breakout, which commands around $40,000. The BMW offers superior brakes, handling, and overall refinement, making it exceptional value in the premium bagger segment.
VERDICT
The R18 Roctane succeeds in creating a uniquely German interpretation of the American bagger. It combines BMW's engineering excellence with the visual drama and touring capability that bagger enthusiasts demand. While it may not convert traditional cruiser purists, it offers a compelling alternative for riders seeking something different.
The Roctane earns high marks for comfort, handling, and distinctive styling, though the limited pannier space and missing fuel gauge prevent it from achieving perfection.
THUMBS UP
Exceptional comfort, surprising handling agility, distinctive styling, competitive pricing, premium build quality
THUMBS DOWN
Limited pannier storage, no fuel gauge, polarising styling won't suit all tastes
