2025 Yamaha MT-07: Still the King of the Middleweight Naked Bikes?
Share
Yamaha's MT-07 has been a dominant force in the middleweight naked bike segment for years, and for good reason. Its torquey CP2 engine, agile handling, and approachable nature have made it a favourite among both new and experienced riders. For 2025, the MT-07 has received a significant update, boasting a range of enhancements that aim to keep it on par with the competition. But with the core engine remaining the same, is it still the one to beat?
Suspension Overhaul: A Game Changer
The most significant upgrade for 2025 is undoubtedly the new upside-down (USD) forks. While the previous model's suspension was by adequate, the addition of USD forks elevates the handling and provides a more premium feel, which is an absolute winner. This upgrade offers improved front-end feedback and control, particularly when pushing the bike through corners.
Subtle Ergonomic Tweaks for Enhanced Comfort
Yamaha has also made minor adjustments to the rider ergonomics. The handlebars are slightly closer and lower, while the footpegs have been lowered by a centimetre. While it's not a significant difference from the models, the 2025 version offered a touch more comfort, especially with the slightly wider handlebars. These subtle changes aim to provide a more relaxed riding position without compromising the bike's agility.
Striking New Styling and Modern Tech
The 2025 MT-07 features a completely revised design, with a sharper and more aggressive aesthetic. The new headlight design is a definite improvement over the previous model, looking cleaner both illuminated and off. The bold blue wheels on the model we were supplied with certainly make a statement, aligning with the aggressive styling of the MT range. The matte finish on the new colour options is also a welcome change for those who prefer it over gloss of the 2024 version.
The dated key position of the previous model has been rectified, now placed in a more convenient location behind the display which is a new 5-inch full-colour TFT display. While the same size as before, it is a new unit that's easy to read and navigate. A key addition is the integrated navigation via Yamaha's free MyRide Link app, allowing riders to connect their smartphones for turn-by-turn directions.
Rider Modes and Ride-by-Wire Throttle
Borrowing switchgear from the MT-09 and XSR900, the 2025 MT-07 now features selectable rider modes. With Street, Sport, and a customisable mode, so you can tailor the bike's response to your preferences and riding conditions. However, the difference between the modes isn't dramatically noticeable, with Sport mode still offering a smooth and manageable throttle response. The introduction of ride-by-wire throttle is another significant update, contributing to a smooth and refined feel, especially during filtering and general riding.
Same Torquey CP2 Heart
Despite all the updates, the 2025 MT-07 retains the beloved 659cc CP2 parallel-twin engine. This engine has been a cornerstone of the MT-07's success, offering a fantastic blend of torque and user-friendliness. Both the standard HO (High Output) and LAMS (Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme) versions are available,
The exhaust note is MT-07 – not overly loud, but with a pleasing, deeper tone than previous iterations. An optional quick shifter is also available, and if we were to buy one, this is a something we would add, without a doubt.
Interestingly, Yamaha has announced an upcoming automatic manual transmission version of the MT-07, which is sure to generate considerable interest, particularly among commuters.
The Verdict: Still a Top Contender
Our overall impression of the 2025 Yamaha MT-07 is overwhelmingly positive. The significant upgrades, particularly the USD forks and modern technology, justify the slight price increase, which now sits just under $15,000 AUD for both the HO and LAMS versions. While that's a jump from the 2023 LAMS model's price, the added features and improved riding experience make it a worthwhile investment.
The MT-07 remains a fantastic all-around motorcycle. Its torquey engine makes it an excellent learner bike, while experienced riders will appreciate its agility and fun factor for commuting and weekend rides. While it might not be the first choice for long-distance touring, it's certainly capable if needed. The 2025 Yamaha MT-07 appears to have cemented its position as a top contender in the middleweight naked bike segment.
